Night Ramblings
A wild and windy night here in Burbank. A couple of panels from our stables have already blown loose and I thought I saw our VW sailing overhead toward Griffith Park about an hour ago. Yet, through it all, our neighbors goddamn noisy wind chimes refuse to blow down. Ah, well.

Strangeness pervades these days. There's something unnerving in the air and it isn't just my old Cabriolet. Many people have taken to stopping me on the street, accosting me in bookstores, waylaying me in movie studios or bushwacking me in restaurants. Through pinched and worried lips they ask one thing: "Paul, what is happening with Justice League Unlimited?!?" To which I respond: "Who ARE you people?"

Still, this tells me two rather disturbing things: 1. That I am much easier to visually identify than I would like to think, and 2. Lots of folks, few of them children, are obsessed with the fate of a kid's cartoon series, albeit the best one currently produced for US TV.

In general I am not qualified to speak about what may or may not be going on with JLU (that's the province of Bruce Timm, James Tucker and Dwayne MacDuffie) but because so many people keep asking me what is going on, I have provided what few answers I feel confident in giving to some of the more frequently asked questions I have received:

Q. When are the new episodes coming on?
A. I don't know.

Q. When will the Vixen action figure be out?
A. I don't know.

Q. Who is in the Supergirl episode that you wrote besides Supergirl?
A. I promised I wouldn't say, but as the working title was "Supergirl and the Legion," that should give you a clue.

Q. Will the prime-time airing of JLU be letterboxed?
A. I don't know.

Q. Will there BE prime-time airings of JLU?
A. I assume so, but as I have no divine knowledge of Cartoon Network's schedule for the coming year, I'll say I don't know.

Q. Will the Vixen figure be offered on a solo card or in the three-pack with Dr. Fate and Hawkgirl only?
A. I don't know.

Q. Is CN planning more episodes of JLU beyond this season?
A. I don't know.

Q. How about Teen Titans?
A. I don't know.

Q. Would a write-in campaign guarantee more episodes of those series?
A. I'm not sure the folks who make those decisions can read.

Q. Will there be a Krypto cross-over on JLU or vice-versa?
A. Krypto (or a version of him) was on JLU last season in the very cool "For the Man Who Has Everything" episode. As far as a JLU appearance on Krypto's show, I'd have to give that a big N-O.

Q. Will Jack and Kate ever get it on?
A. Kindly confine your questions to animation only, please.

Q. What's up with Claire's baby?
A. See above.

Q. Will there be a ten inch Vixen action figure?
A. You don't get out much, do you?

Q. How about a Huntress, Zatanna and Star Spangled Kid three-pack?
A. See above.

I hope those answers clear up a few things, most importantly, that as far as the future of JLU stands, I have no idea what's going on. I do know I plan on enjoying the show when it finally airs in the US. Hey, I'm a fan, too.

Today's Reading: "Wimbledon Green" by Seth. I read a preview of this book over the summer and was anxious to finally sit down with the whole thing this weekend. I found it a very funny and creative series of loosely-connected vignettes about the greatest comic book collector in the world, an odd little character who may or may not be someone named Wimbledon Green. On the surface Green seems to be a better-spoken, more affable, certainly wealthier version of the Simpsons Comic Book Guy...then again, he may not. Rather than give away any more I encourage you to seek out the book and give it a read for yourself. It's great fun.

I did an on camera interview with Bruce, David (Jimmy Olsen) Kaufman, Glen Murakami and Alan Burnett last night for the next (and last) SUPERMAN DVD set. Afterwards we went to dinner where Glen confirmed the end of TITANS, and Bruce said pretty much the same about JLU. There has been some talk about the JLU episodes airing earlier in the states, but that was still being debated at Cartoon Network. I forgot to ask Bruce how my Supergirl episode came out. Maybe I can get a preview if I'm at WB any time soon.

I had heard people were getting more territorial with certain DC characters (no more Joker in JLU, for instance) but I didn't know the details. I knew two years ago when I left, that as heroes (and their villains) got snapped up in live movie options, it tended limited their appearances elsewhere.

Well,Paul, damn, but I can't say it was unexpected, given the levels of corporate territoriality you mentioned.

Is the cancellation of JLU locked in stone or is there any hope, even at this late date, for a reprieve?

Anyway, thanks for all your fantastic work and the very best to you, good sir!

Grr. I'd heard the outlook was grim for JLU, but I was hoping that the quality of the show would turn some heads -- it's rare for an animated series to have this profound of a pull on the die-hard fanbase and to be so close to the spirit of the source material.

If it is territorialism that's helping to end JLU, though, I don't think that'll ever be a problem with an S/LSH series ("No! We've greenlit a Bouncing Boy movie for summer '08!")....

Hello Paul, this is Binker. I've been a fan of the shows you and Bruce did, but I'm also a fan of (holds up shield against haters of this show) The Batman show. I persoanlly review JLU, TB and I did the last of TT.

I wanted to ask about what are you going to do now? I mean you are doing Batman comics now, which is great. And that Supergirl and the Legion of Superheroes, of course. But, if that plan doesn't go through, what else?

Is there a possibility that you and Bruce could be part of the new Batman show?

I assume that the territorialism is also helping to end the Titans(the rumor that Robin is to appear on The Batman)?

If anything, the reaction at the shows being cancelled were the best a show could ever get: total outrage. Personally, I hope that both of them get another season or two out of them. Hopefully, the shows will get the same reaction upon cancellation.

It's a bit of a bummer, but the fate of JLU has been written on the wall for months now. I don't expect them to ever officially confirm it. Did they ever confirm Samurai Jack's cancellation?

Oh, and hey Paul -- Jim from The World's Finest here. Thought I'd drop a line in here. If you want a look at the loglines for the last episodes, I got them right here for ya:

Well, JLU I can understand, at least from a pinhead network exec standpoint ("Hey, this show we keep preempting and don't promote isn't getting good ratings! Axe it!"), but Teen Titans comes as something of a shock as it's clearly one of CN's biggest moneymakers.

What I can't begin to understand is how WB execs are behind, say, The Batman and Loonatics Unleashed when they have properties like JLU at their disposal. But what makes even LESS sense to me is that I just saw a list of Annie nominees and The Batman figures prominently, whereas JLU and Teen Titans seem to be entirely absent. (Maybe they just figure they've given the Dini/Timm/Burnett/McDuffie DCAU shows enough awards over the past 13 years or so?)

Curious, too, about your comments on the role DC Editorial plays in this; I'd noticed of course that we hadn't seen Joker recently on JLU (or at all on JLU, technically, since his last appearance preceded the name change), but assumed that was a choice on the creatives' part and not a DC edict -- again, Joker's been on The Batman, in one of the worst versions of the character I've ever seen (albeit voiced superbly by Kevin Michael Richardson, a favorite of mine, but just not the same as Hamill). It seems absurd to me that DC would restrict the use of its more popular characters in the TV medium, although it's perfectly in keeping with their losing strategy of refusing to appeal to a new or younger audience.

Well, the DCAU had a good run -- and frankly, I was surprised JLU got a fifth season at all.

But I have to say, the DCAU version of Batman is my all-time favorite, and I have high hopes that you'll bring your vision of the character to Detective. For me, at least, it will provide a welcome break from the "Are you retarded? I'm the goddamn Batman!" version in All-Star.

Gentlemen, it's been an honor.

Hey "DUMB-ASS"!!!!, you have no idea what the hell you're talking about!!!! To say, ya, screw JLU, so be it, but keep TT is obsured
! JLU is probably "THE" best cartoon out there. It just doesn't get the recognition that TT receives, due to the stupid time and day they show it. Who is going to stay up at 10:30 to watch a cartoon, never mind showing it on Saturday night! Okay, I'll give you this much, way too many "soft" characters in the Unlimited series, but bringing in Aquaman(who I might add needs more appearances), Green Arrow, Supergirl, Green Lantern(The white version, who also needs more appearances), those are classic superheroes that need recognition. Okay, TT is an "okay" series, but hands down, it can never top JLU! I say, "SAVE JLU, PLEASE"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My son and I have been collecting most of the action figures... don't just drop the show like a bad habit! It's, by far, the best cartoon show!

Why Would they get rid of JLU it one of the best cartoons out there, and it not that Anima looking crap teen titans was, i think the stories on it are great but the look sucked.

JLU is part of that on going DC story line started back when i was in grade School with the first batman series. (not that craptastic Jackie Chan one)

i think The WB is out of it's mind to drop that seires, i spent every chance i got watching JLU and i plan on Getting all the DVD sets, that WHole DC Storyline run, i just got all the Supermans, now i'm moving onto JLU.(which anyone who wants to save JLU thats what you need to do, thats what saved Family Guy, the DVD sales made FOX relaunch the series) those stories are some of the great TV i have watched PERIOD!!!!

WB needs to walk up and See they at only pissing off their Fan base, which is poor buisness all together!!!!

Well, all in all even the show is in fact finished I'm mighty satisfied with the ending. I just saw what definitely looked like an ultimate conclusion of the show, and I gotta say that the end was totally awesome. All I wanna know now is if there is going to be a complete box set DVD of both series JL as well as JLU. I've seen a couple volumes here and there on sale but they only seem to be three episodes each. I wanna be able to get the whole thing in one set. Any news as to a couple complete sets coming out?

JLU wasnt just my favorite cartoon. It was my favorite show on television. I was crushed when I found out about the cancellation. I haven't watched a cartoon with that much excitement in my life. Even as a child. Everyone involved did a great job. I never really collected DC comic's but after watching JLU I was hooked into the DC universe. As a life long comic fan I never heard of people like Captain Atom and Black Canary until JLU. IT just hurts me that something so good can be taking off of TV. Especially considering Bruce's long success through Batman til now. It just sucks. Everyone involved should know they have changed my life to some degree.

On the off chance that Paul Dini will actually read this. I am just going to say this.
My name is Thomas Estes. I watched Batman the Animated Series on Fox when I was 10. Since then my life changed, not a lot, but a little. Batman was not my favorite super hero, but I liked the movies so I watched. And slowly Batman became my idol. It occurred to me that he was just a man. I mean sure he was trained as a samuri, and he had all that money and those gadgets- but still just a man. It made me wonder what I could do if I tried. Batman taught me things that my parents couldn't. Batman taught me a few lessons on right and wrong, Batman taught me not to look away when I see something wrong, "It's Never Too Late" taught me the power of redemption, "Beware the Gray Ghost" taught me reverence for the past, "Night of the Ninja" taught me the importance of honor, and "Over The Edge" reminded me how much I loved my father. Most of all it taught me to keep trying even when things look hopeless.

When things get rough in my life I actually (God I feel dumb admitting this) think, "What would Batman do?" and then I do that.

I know you didnt write all those episodes, but I just wanted to thank you- and everyone that worked on Batman and Superman and Justice League- for the entertainment and also for the lessons.

P.S. Your Batman is what I think of when I think of Batman- and it always will be.

*Now for the fanboy part*
I really loved Justice League, the writing was superb. The Batman is a sad imitation (though Mr. Freeze and Firefly have great character designs). I really wish the show didnt have to end here based soly on the fact that ending it last season would have been so much better. Season five was good no question, but the end of season four was so sweet. A two season plot arch that often left me wondering, culminating in Lex Luthor becoming a god- need I say more?
But I guess Darksied coming back from the dead only disappear with Lex Luthor after he gives him the Anti-life equation is okay too.

Just found out in wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Justice_League_Unlimited#Cancellation) this:

Paul Dini, writer for the show, announced on January 25, 2006 via a reply to a blog entry that the show had been cancelled. However, in July 2006 it was learned that Warner Bros. is currently developing an animated movie that will once again team up many of the Justice League characters. This movie is an adaptation of DC: The New Frontier by Darwyn Cooke.

That's just sad. I loved the series so much I even watch the repeats everytime its aired. Now I know why they are repeating the same episodes now since mid of this year.
